Designing Retreats for Government Innovators

Opportunity
- A lean, founding team of directors sought to activate a recently defined prospectus and align on the design and production of a cross-department retreat.
Approach
Supporting global experts across civic innovation, design thinking, digital engagement, and public sector strategy, the retreat sought to provide a unified vision to a growing team. Also, it's design needed to spark relationship-building, collaboration opportunities and curiosity for the work ahead. Leaders aimed to balance high-level inspiration with the bare bones of team operations and to do so in a restorative, inclusive, and creative setting.
We began by grounding in a shared understanding of the variety of retreat frameworks, brainstorming expectations, needs, and opportunities, and discussing adaptations for various learning and social styles. Through a series of working and coaching sessions via Miro and Zoom, we facilitated desires to minimize unidirectional learning, reduce corporate settings, incorporate design thinking activities, and create concrete deliverables that could be immediately utilized. Ultimately we helped to finalize retreat objectives, and drafted, tested, and adapted activities for final production.
